FHE Idea: Missionaries
This is a good Family Home Evening lesson to have if you have a relative or friend leaving to serve a mission. It’s also just a good idea to review the importance of missionary work.
FHE Theme: Missionary Work
Scripture: Matthew 28:19, D&C 18:15
Songs: “I Hope They Call Me on a Mission” Children’s Songbook and “I’ll Go Where You Want Me to Go” LDS Hymnbook
Story: Heavenly Father loves all of His children and wants them to return to him, but for that to happen everyone in the world needs to hear about the Gospel. When missionaries preach throughout the world they are bringing their spiritual brothers and sisters back to God. Not only that, but those who serve missions are blessed and benefit from their service.
If you can, include this video from The Mormon Channel in your FHE lesson (it’s about 5 minutes long):
After the video discuss missionary goals as a family. Are the children preparing for missions? Are mom and dad going to serve a couples mission later in life? Is an aunt or uncle leaving on a mission soon?
Do you have any good missionary stories? What about a conversion story? Telling stories is important, because I think people know that they “should” go on a mission, but it’s a personal decision and a huge commitment. By telling stories, setting goals, and talking about missionary work frequently, will show your family that you personally feel that it is important which will mean more to them than having someone tell them what they “should” do.
End the lesson by bearing your testimony about the importance of missionary work.
If you’d like to add a fun game to your FHE lesson try Missionary Clue from Green Jello with Carrots. It’s based on the concept of the board game Clue, but with a missionary twist. The pieces are all printable and easy to put together. Plus it’s just a really fun way to keep the conversation going and spend some quality time as a family!
And, as always, don’t forget to serve super delish treats at the end (or while you play)!
