FHE: Celebrating All Our Fathers
0Let’s celebrate all kinds of fathers this week! There are many types of fathers we may have–our earthly father, Heavenly Father, father of the ward (the bishop) or even father of our country. What can we do to show appreciation to the fathers in our lives, and not just on Father’s Day, but always?

FHE: Preparing for the Second Coming
0Our duty as Latter-day Saints is to prepare ourselves, this earth, and its inhabitants for the Second Coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. Being prepared and being strong as the gospel teaches ensures happiness… Keith B. McMullin
This week’s family home evening lesson is from A Year of FHE, on preparing for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. The best way we can prepare for the Savior’s coming is to accept the teachings of the gospel and make them part of our lives. We should live each day the best we can, just as Jesus taught when He was on the earth. We can look to the prophet for guidance and follow his counsel. We can live worthy to have the Holy Ghost guide us.
This lesson has a printable handout to help children visualize how they can build up a reserve of faith, just like the wise virgins who stored extra oil in Christ’s parable, and it also has instructions for making your own salt dough lamp.

FHE: Game Night!
0I just went to a stake conference where the speaker claimed that the secret to a successful family home evening is the delicious refreshments. We all had a laugh, but it got me thinking…maybe I really should ramp up the treats and the fun to make Monday night our favorite night of the week, the one we look forward to all week long.
So it was perfect timing that I ran into this article with over 35 games for family home evening! Enjoy your Memorial Day evening by doing something fun and making some wonderful memories. And, of course, don’t forget the delicious refreshments! (Need ideas? Click here for these Butterfinger Caramel Bars and a bunch of other recipe ideas.)

FHE: Home, a Place of Safety
0A battle of good against evil rages all around us. We need to do everything in our power to make our homes a haven and a place of safety. Today’s family home evening focuses on how we create a safe environment for our families. We cannot afford to be complacent in our stewardship as guardians of our home. We must be diligent in sealing up the cracks in our home where the adversary is getting in to influence our family.
Safety ultimately comes from the Lord. As long as we are prayerfully striving to build a home according to His specifications, He will magnify our efforts and fill us with His Spirit.
We also must involve our children in making our home a place of safety. They need to know that we depend on them to do their part to not let evil enter here. One of the most obvious cracks (sometimes it can seem like a gaping hole) in our home can be the media. Internet, movies, television, video games, music, magazines, and books can be uplifting, enlightening and entertaining. But the adversary can also use them for his purposes. Making wise media decisions is not always easy or convenient and it often involves sacrifice on our part, but it is eternally worth it! We must set the example for our children, and teach them through word and deed to choose the right.
Read the entire post at Latter-day Homeschooling, which discusses many things, including resources for screening and filtering media, and how to involve and teach our children to make wise media choices.
