When Families Aren’t Forever, Part 3

Questions Arising from Divorce

by Russ Beck

Editor’s note: This is the last of a three-part series on divorce.

Over the years, I have counseled with many people going through the pains and trials of divorce and who were struggling with gospel-related questions.  In the LDS culture there is significant emphasis–rightly placed–on families being eternal.  We learn of children being sealed to the parents, the couple being sealed to each other and of the need to be married to enjoy the highest degree of happiness in the hereafter.  What, then, does all this mean to someone who now is in the midst of a dissolving marriage?

 Effective Parenting, Part 2

by Russ Beck

Most of us tend to parent in the same basic fashion as our mother and father.  It feels natural and right to us.  We are emotionally invested in our parents and love them, which means trying to look with objective eyes at how we were raised is not easy.  We tend to feel as if we are betraying loved ones when we even consider a different parenting style.  Yet it is essential for us to predetermine what kind of parents we want to be—otherwise, we just end up “doing what comes naturally.”  The results may not be what we truly desire for our children.

pi·o·neer (p -nîr )
n.
2b: one of the first to settle in a territory

From the Merriam Webster online dictionary
A lot of members of the Church have ancestors that crossed the plains in companies, pulling handcarts or riding in wagons. But not all members do.
So, what about the rest of us? If you’re like me, and you were the first members in your area when it was open to preach the gospel, then you’re a pioneer in your own right. (more…)

Welcome to the Neighborhood News

There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal. … It is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub, and exploit

We are supposed to be embarked in a good cause and doing good at all times, right?
It is so easy to get distracted by circumstances, other people, or extra drama in our lives. Some of us don’t need extra drama, and some of us are a walking example of drama.  We like the attention people other than our spouse give us and we think we’re madly in love and want to start our lives anew. Is that right? Was there abuse or cheating from the ‘guilty’ party? Or was it all in our heads? (more…)

Welcome to the Neighborhood News

I didn’t know my mother had it. I think a lot of women don’t know their mothers had it; that’s the sad thing about depression. You know, you don’t function anymore. You shut down.
You feel like you are in a void.
